Thanks, James. I noticed your post of the 23rd and thought they might be related. I'll take a look at what you've come up with. The items in my mover aren't tied to data, so I don't have to worry about saving (and thus IsChanged()) but your solution may give me some ideas.

As I said to Marcia and Kevin, I've got it stuck in my head that IndexToItemID or ItemIDToIndex is the answer, if only I can figure out how to "phrase the question" in the code. Like you, I have something that works so if I have to I can move on from here, but if there's a better, cleaner solution I'd like to use it.
