For simple, one-line selects or updates, no. However, stored procs are compiled and generally will run faster. My cardinal rule is every trip to the server costs performance, so if you can batch them up into a stored proc, you will be better off.
Also, your SQL box typically has a lot more horsepower than an individual workstation. You can take advantage of this with stored procs.
