Try to enter the URL to the web service directly in your browser (e.g. http://localhost/myapp/myservice.asmx) and make sure the browser can get to it.

Once that works use that same URL in VS.NET


>In studying for MS Certification exam, I'm trying to add a web reference to a project in Visual Studio .Net. It doesn't seem to find the server or the service(404 error). I'm running XP. Everything is self-contained on my laptop, even the web reference. I think I have everything set up except for this. Can anybody help?
