This is related to how Word "saves as" HTML. If you have later versions of Word, change the file type during the "Save As" to "UNFILTERED HTML" - you will get a warning box about the Office-specific tags being removed. Go ahead and accept it and then things will work as intended.

Or use something besides Word to generate the HTML files.
