>I'm not sure what you mean by "The characters not used by digits will carry all the other symbols". It sounds like I need to create 3 controls on the report; routing, bank and check number using a "numeric MICR font". Between these controls do I create blank controls using the appropiate "special character MICR font". Does that sound about right?

In the MICR font, the special characters are implemented as the letters a, b, c and d.

The MICR specifications require precise character sizing and placement relative to the edges of the document. Take a look at http://www.bizfonts.com/MICRFont/#problems for some insight into the types of issues you may run into and ways to deal with them. A Google search for 'MICR specifications' will give you a lot of other places to look, too.
