(if I understand what you're asking) I trap the error, build an error message for the user (generally nothing more than a "Bad Date" type message) then redisplay the form so they can fix it. In most cases, I'm not so concerned about what was "bad" about the date, just that failed parsing and that I need to let the user know they need to double-check/fix it.
