You shouldn't have any problems with VARTYPE(). I don't know what the problem could be. BTW, no quotes with VARTYPE(), quotes with TYPE(). One reason to go with the former, from my POV at least, would be you can also use it to tell if an object reference has been destroyed. It'll return "X" if this is the case. TYPE() will return "O".
