One possible explanation is that VFP is keeping a cache of classes in use, specially if you gave it a trial run between last edit and attempt of compiling. Clear All should clear the cache, and the vcx is not in use anymore.

I used to get one of those once in a while, and it's become almost a reflex to type Clear All, Release All, Close All (or to use a cleaner like Terry does) when it happens.
