Fox 2.5/6 does not have a maximum of 25 files. (FoxPROX DOS had 225, I think Windows was the same).

Besides you're confusing two different maximums. Whether 25 or 225, that limit would pertain to work areas.

By contrast, the "too many files" error open refers to file handles open in the OS. Which is what everybody has been trying to help you with here.

Fox opens several file handles for temp files, and there can be at least three open for each dbf you open (dbf, fpt, cdx, plus any NDX/IDX files). Plus resource file (if used, takes 3). Plus any other files you open, whether through SET ALTERNATE, LLFFns, etc.
