As you have found Michel, the ultimate solution is to go to entirely top-levels, this elimates a number of such problems. TLs give you much more "hands-on" control. I finally did this 3-4 years ago in all apps after problems like yours.

This won't do you any immediate good, I know, just a long-term suggestion.
