>Is there a simple way to have a query or sql - select statement prompt for the value of a variable? It seems overkill to open the query designer, or modify program code, or open a form just to run the same query for different date.

select ... for MyField = ?SomeVariable
will prompt for a value if "SomeVariable" doesn't exist. Since the dialog isn't very user-friendly, it is usually better to make sure that "SomeVariable" has a value before running the query.
