I've always wondered why anyone would want this long, difficult verbal form. Maybe because I do mainly numerical work, I don't understand. But they do seem popular here.

The only place I can think of for this is on bank checks, where you need to fill in the line below the numerical value with some sort of text to ensure the numeric value is correct. Just "insurance" in case someone forgets a decimal and writes $10000 instead of $100.00, or maybe the decimal point just isn't too clear, or maybe a comma and period get mixed up, etc.

Could this be the reason? Or are there others? Just curious.
