Your point (2) is one of the major problems with general fields. The other is that general fields take up quite a bit additional space, compared to the original file.

I suggest you go for one of the following alternatives:

1) Keep the PDF in a separate file. Keep only the filename, in a short character or memo field.

2) If you insist in incorporating the file itself into the database, use a memo binary, instead of a general field.
