I don't know about your specific problem, because I don't use general fields. And I would recommend you don't use them either. General fields take up more space than the original file (MUCH more, in the case of JPG images), and it is difficult to get the image out again.
Two alternatives, often suggested, are: (1) Keep the file as a file. Have a small field which contains the filename. (2) Store the image in a memo binary field.
