We really try hard to keep this place as peaceful as we could. Interestingly, I think part of the positive social effect here on UT (you know most other forums are usually quite less peaceful), as far as our experience goes, is the widely indentifiable info about each member.

The idea behind us requiring each member to provide a real indentity (which is carefully validated one-by-one), adding the flag, etc, is actually focused in make a stronger commitment with the rest of the community, specifically.

I understand your point about country/cultural prejudices (although I can understand the people having them), but looking it the other way, in most cases it really helps. Knowing that a person comes from China (or Argentina), tend to make a US/Canadian reader (for example) more forgiving with this person language, more aware about potential cultural differences to have in mind about his question/viepoint, etc.

About the pictures, I think this is one of the MOST important features on UT forums dealing with the sense of community. Even while I don't know you in person, reading your name immediately evokes your face (even while maybe the little picture is misleading). I think anyone get to quickly remember most frequent UT members just by the "photo effect".

Of course, this can be positive opr negative depending on how people remembers the other<s>, but you know that you can find difficult people anywhere. Actually, I think that if the whole world could keep the same sense of community we have here... things could be much better!
