Thanks for the response. I worked on the upgrade over the last weekend - 2 x 16 hours per day. The OFS was toast, as you suggested, but fortunately the db was not. In the end I had to move the database to our disaster recovery server under NT/Oracle 8.0.5 and upgrade it to 8.1.7 there and then move it to the new server under 8.1.7 and Win2K. Later on we will trash the 1/2 cluster box.

The oracle forum has not given me any help either. I think that this is one of those problems that no one wants to get involved with. Because this is a SAP system, I logged the call with them too - they couldn't really help either!
