Hmmm...When you install any of the server editions of SQL Server, the Northwind database is automatically created. I'm not sure about MSDE. Maybe the install script is there but not automatically run. The script is named INSTNWND.SQL. On my machine it's located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Install.
