Visual SourceSafe is a program that does version control, and source control.

Visual SourceSave can keep several versions of each file. You can easily go back to a previous version, for example, to compare with the current version.

For a single developer, this is useful; for a developer team, a tool like Visual SourceSafe is even more important, because it keeps a central database with the official version of each form, class, PRG, etc.

Each programmer, before starting to modify a form, for example, should do a "check-out". This will mark the file, in the central VSS database, as "opened by Hilmar for modification", for instance. The check-out is more or less automated if you integrate VSS with the VFP project.

When the changes are done, the programmer does a "check-in", returning the new version of the file to the central database. The programmer can add a comment.

Next time another programmer does a check-out, he will get this latest version.
