Actually, this was supposed to be an example, with a business example I knew better than your example. If it makes you think about partial payments, fine; but the idea was to apply the database design ideas to the other case.

The person who originated the thread (you, in this case) will see buttons at the bottom of each message. Two of the buttons which are close to the right side have tooltips that say something to the effect that you can mark the message as the solution to the thread, or as a help to the thread.

The idea is that if you think that a particular reply solves your problem, you mark it as the "solution"; only one message can be thus marked.

Several messages can be marked as "help" - when you think they assisted you.

After marking, you have the option of un-marking. If you want to change a message marked as "help" to "solution" or vice-versa, you have to un-mark first.
