I'm not sure about Cobol, Fortran and PL/1. I never used PL/1 and it's too long time since I haven't used the other two. But in Pascal, only [] are used for arrays.

As I said yesterday, everyone can use whatever s/he wants. It's your chioce. You asked me and I answered to you. To make it short: I gave two strong reasons to use []: avoid some possible bugs and good readability. I still see no reason to use () for arrays. 2-0...
