I tried to do exactly that last week, and my conclusion was that the designer feature in question is not for what we both had in mind. I'm not a big (at all) user of the report designer, so there is a chance I'm all wet here.

I (now) interpret the setting of the column count as being how many OF THE SINGLE COLUMN OF DATA do you want to be shown on the page.
