I have to agree with your statement. Thoughts that come to mind are “a solution looking for a problem”. The changing interface also reminds me of politicians doing something to let you know they are there and “working on your behalf”. Often change hurts especially when you were content to begin with. I think Michel likes to see if we are awake. :)

Here is an idea: Change the interface on your clients application without his/her request and see the result.
