...from my Lockergnome e-mail today.

================

What do you think? Too good to be true? A new entry into the Windows-on-Linux fray has emerged, and first impressions leave me wanting to know more. Many attempts at running Windows applications on top of Linux have come and gone, though not all have died just yet. WINE and Lindows are the most recognized projects, but both have their problems. A new middleware "bridge," called David, appears to accomplish what every Linux enthusiast trapped in a Windows world has dreamed about.

David is not a virtual machine product, and it doesn't have the packaging difficulties of Lindows. It's essentially a system service, of sorts, that allows Windows applications to run natively on top of Linux. It does not require a Windows license, imposes no heavy lifting on developers to address individual application operation problems, and is said to be easy on hardware requirements. Simply install David, and then install your Windows applications. Cool, huh?

We've heard the talk before, and the walk has always suffered from a pronounced limp. The ambulatory nature of David remains to be seen, but the descriptions and architecture concepts are quite intriguing. Further, the implications on the PC market in general are staggering, should David prove to be the real deal. I can hear lawyers shuffling paperwork already. [Furo]
