A support rep from Microsoft figured out the problem. All I had to do is re-register OLE32.DLL. Apparently, when I installed a recent hot fix, that file failed to register properly. Possibly because of a virus scanner issue.

They don't know exactly why, but after re-registering that DLL all is fine.
