My experience in helping novice users and VFP newbies is that they tend to bite off too much at once. My recommendation to them is to learn things in this order:

DBFs (BROWSE, APPEND, etc. -- use command window)
Form designer, controls etc. -- don't worry about OOP
DBC
Data Sessions
OOP
Runtime distribution

It seems to help when concentrating and learning one aspect at a time.
