I think it's great to learn other languages. Americans would do well to learn more than English.
When I applied for Interpreter it was also as an interrogator and I was told that I'd go to Monterrey to learn whatever language was needed. Later, after my first enlistment in the Marines was over, I became a Spanish-speaking Mormon (LDS) Missionary, which is how I became fluent in Espanol. I now have a daughter and a son on missions, my daughter being in the Russia Rostov Mission (near the Black Sea) and my son was sent off to St. Louis, Missouri (to learn English!). My daughter loves Russia, but she said that many people walk around in a drunken stupor, because their lives are so miserable. They've lost hope for a better life and are stuck in their old ways.
I would like to have gone to Germany, but the Marines covered more areas in the Far East than anywhere else at that time. Now, I am so old that no one would want me anyway. (Okay, I'm not that old, but too old to go running around the globe now). I retired from the Navy Reserve in April of 2001, right before 9/11 hit. Once 9/11 hit, I sent an email to New Orleans where Navy Reserve headquarters is and said that I'd volunteer to come back, but, of course, they never respodned. I would not doubt that the Draft will come back. Two Demcroats are pushing the draft even now.
