I use VFP with MySQL and it works nice. I actually like to create DB Management programs for web databases with MySQL. Saves time and works gr8.

Check out www.MySQL.com. You can download everything you want from there.

Firebird is also reputed to be good. I have not used it although I used Interbase (its predecessor) succesfully. Didn't really like Interbase though.

I would recommend MySQL because it is very prevalent on the web and, if you are going to get into web development you will have a leg up.
