In addition to what I said before and the maps Alex found, it also should be noted that Jordan (then called TransJordan) was created at the same time the British took over Palestine and was specifically as a home for Arabs.
In general, you need to keep in mind that Israel, with or without the land captured in 1967, is a tiny country, occupying less than 1% of the Middle East. Just to give you some perspective, these are land areas in sq. km for some of the major players in that part of the world:
