I'll tell you, I am not a great big fan of import from. I much prefer CSV or something like that when I can get away with it. If the structure of the resulting data file is something you know beforehand, I would recommend getting excel to output a CSV file and appending from there.
Without really seeing the excel file, I have no idea what it could be. If you emailed me a sample, I can look at it and see if I can come up with something.
