802.11b is, if memory serves, 11MBPS whereas a wired network is (typically) 100MBPS. In addition, the actual speed you get to the workstation is different depending on how good the signal strength is.
To begin with, I would ask if 802.11G is a possibility because G is 54MBPS. I would also ask if you have access points put out to boost the signal. That might help too. Finally, see if they have any 2.4ghz phones around. Those can interfere with a wireless network (which is also 2.4ghz). I cannot personally attest to this latest point because I have not witnessed it but this is what I have read and have been told.
