Actually, when the error fires we do a memory dump, and mdepartment isn't defined in any way. Not as an alias, not as an array, not anything. So why VARTYPE() does not return "U" as one would expect is a mystery to us.

Going with Sergey's advice, we will see if a switch to TYPE() resolves this. Seems like taking a step back, though...
