Thanks for your reply, it's taken me ages to reply because all hell broke loose, not least in the form of babies getting first teeth!

Have slowly limped my way through various recommendations, datasessions etc and have attacked any number of problems which seemed to be the result of knowing alittle about alot and trying to use it all! I am, however, winning! You're right, it's worth the pain.
