You didn't make that clear in your original post and I think a lot of the replies that you received assumed that the problem was at design time.
I did something like what you are trying to accomplish. I allowed users to drag and drop from a list of fields onto a form at runtime. A specific control had to be used depending on the field type (dropdownlist for foreign keys, spinners for numeric, etc.) I, however, never had to do this for a grid control since I was only allowing the users to select individual fields. The grid would be used for records no?
Anyway, my control classes were all based on a container. If your grid works within a container, why not keep it there?
