They do not have to control you. It is enough to control the information you get.
Or, maybe you have your own sources of information on anything? CIA in a miniature? :)
You make your judgements on the information you can obtain. Clearly, nobody can have the first-hand information on everything. We all get most of the information from third-party sources. All those information sources cannot be controlled by you (unless you are already in power :)
Obviously, all information may be controlled, inverted, manipulated, hidden thousands of ways in somebody's best interests (not necessarily yours :)
Any information the person claims to have should have a prefix "as far as I know". Mine included. :)
