Each NIC has a unique number (MAC); the GUID takes advantage of that for part of the code. It seems that another part of the code is a kind of sequential number. I also understand that the code is somehow transformed, so that the MAC can't be recognized.
If no NIC is present, some sort of random number is used instead.
