Rick Strahl has done some amazing work with Fat Client internet enabled VFP applications.
I believe his Hentzenwerke book goes into great detail about how to build Fat Client internet connected apps.

If using an internet enabled fat client connection with a web hosted database I'd recommend making the connection a VPN for additional security.
