The "other" method, which I use, is to create edit audit trails. This in addition to nightly tape backups, which in total provides fairly comprehensive coverage.
Getting audit trail data back into tables is as tricky as the amount of work you put into it - we only put a moderate amount of work into it, basically a record-keeping feature. But the info is there, for an emergency, and we can restore from audit if finer-tuned restoration than nightly backups is needed.
As for the auditing itself, you can build your own like me, or there is (I think) still available for purchase, FoxAudit I think the name is. No doubt superior to the homemade-job I use.
