Jijo,
ActiveVFP is a FREE, Open Source add-on and takes advantage of VFP mtdlls, the same technology that VFP Web Services run on. Therefore learning ActiveVFP will benefit you as far as learning VFP Web Services. The other benefit is that you can use ASP.NET(as well as ASP) with ActiveVFP thus taking advantage of the latest MS technology while continuing to use VFP.
As Bill pointed out, you can compare the speed and scalability of this technology (up to 360 hits per second) against the other available 3rd party products and I think you'll see the advantages of creating web applications in this way. The key difference is that we are using VFP multi-threaded dlls while the older Microsoft technologies and all of the other 3rd party products (this doesn't include pure ASP.NET, of course) use backend .EXE servers. DLLs are inherently faster and smoother as far as VFP web development/deployment goes.
