At this point it's momentum. *L* It's been like that since VFP3 and changing it would potentially hose some apps.
It really is definative proof for the concept that you should have your own layer of subclasses of the VFP Baseclasses that you use everywhere so that you can "fix" what you consider to be "poor" design choices of Microsoft. *g*
