>i use it all the time in addition to my norton. it may be that the virus took out the av on the machine but this link is to an online virus scan that is fairly quick but is not corrupt by the virus on the machine. also try www.pestscan.com to see if there are any nasty's on the machine.

Thanks Mark, I'll relay that first URL to the guy (the 2nd one I know about already) - but I was wondering what the critter is that causes this behavior, not so much the fix...
