I have used the MSCOMM control and COMMTOOLS (Hallogram sells it).
As for MSCOMM it is easy to use, but does not have built in support for file transfer protocols IE:XMODEM, YMODEM, ZMODEM, etc...
COMMTOOLS does although it is not an active X control, just a 32bit FLL & DLL.
Still pretty easy, I use a timer to monitor DSR/DCD/RI, then establish connection and use their file transfer routines to exchange files.
BTW I am communicating with Portable barcode collection devices (SYMBOL).
I would check out the ActiveX stuff. (I had COMMTOOLS from 2.6 so i stuck with it)
Good Luck...
