"No, you must not". You can also open the Windows Explorer and look for the file on the server; or use the "Run" command and type in the complete path.

The shortcut is only a convenience, comparable to the "Favorites" or "Bookmarks" in your browser. BTW, a "Favorite" in IE will also create a shortcut!

The ODBC, I suppose, you can't avoid; I have worked only with DBF so far.
