It seems to be a residue from the days of DOS, with fixed-width characters. One unit is approximately one character. This is no longer exact, since in most fonts, characters have a variable width. Also, you can choose larger or smaller fonts.

The formula for the column width seems to be: width of columns in pixels = (arbitrary units * 7) + 5. Or simply multiply by 7 for an approximation - perhaps the +5 is for the borders, but I am not sure.

I think you can substitute pixel for "point" (1/72 inch), but you will have to do some experimenting to confirm this.

You can do some things in preview. Mainly, if you drag the margins, you will see numbers representing the width of the margin.
