Microsoft's direction for their long time devlopment is .NET. So, what does a company do who produces two fine products? Well, they look at what they consider to be their best development tool and pour the money into that one priority tool and a little into the other. Why would they consider competing with themselves?

Because some folk like to buy Chevrolets and others like to by Buicks. If the market is there, someone will build and market the product. So the issue is not so much competition as it is their (MS) apparant belief that the market does not warrant the investment. That said, the more the clamor out in the marketplace, the more likely the marketing will happen.
