Craig is absolutely right that the framework is where the 'beef' is. The book by Kevin McNeish that was recommended is also very good.
Having said that, one of the best 'starter' books for C# is ironically one of the skinniest and cheapest. C# Essentials, by O'Reilly press. This little book is a gem.
