Well, Dave, I never mentioned the FINANCIAL aspect at all! Sure, anyone can have a web app. up and running fairly cheaply. But it is the surrounding issues that make most small/medium businesses shy away from them.
They're hardly effective in most such businesses for any of efficiency, security, flexibility, maintenance and the general headaches attendant with browser incompatabilities and indiscernible reason for lack of traffic...
cheers
>>At the risk of stating what seems to me to be the obvious, and probably offending someone; web based business apps are overrated and oversold.
>>
>>If the users are all on the same LAN and there is significant data entry (orders, inventory, etc); then client/server is the only way to go. Web applications in this scenario don't add any business value, and actually slow down getting business done. By analogy, it is sort of like adding 21" wheels to your SUV. Doesn't go faster, only makes you feel better. Maintenance cost are higher too, as the tires need to be replaced more often and cost more.

>I did not state whether or not a particular web based solution is the best solution for a particular job, merely, that web based development and maintenance, including intranets, are within the financial means of a small or medium sized business.
