Jeffrey;
I was stationed at Biloxi, Mississippi and had friends from Jackson as well as other locations, during 1963-64. Lots of good food, memories and people are what I recall, along with some not too nice things.
Nevada is called “The Mississippi of the West”. The first permanent white settlement was a group of Mormon’s who created a fort at Genoa, Nevada in 1851 – near Minden and south of Carson City, towards Lake Tahoe. As I recall the oldest saloon in Nevada (1861) is across the street from the fort. My wife and I walked into the saloon which is still active, and walked out immediately. Enter at your own risk! :) Why a saloon near a Mormon settlement?
On Martin Luther Kings birthday in 1994 we were driving by Genoa and just outside of town a bit south was a huge 4 wheel drive truck – one of those models raised several feet off of the ground. Braced upon the side of the truck was a flag pole with a Garrison size Confederate flag flying high. On the windshield was a sign “KKK sign up here”!
I met people in Nevada in 1994 that were more extreme then the most radical person I met in Mississippi during the mid 1960’s. It seemed that many locals had the same attitude. We live in an interesting country.
I have not been in the south since the mid 1960’s. It would be nice to know what attitudes exist today. Several people I know who were born and raised in Mississippi and now live in California say it is very different and they want to return. I do miss those fishing boats!
