Out of the box you can't connect to SQL or Oracle without making some code changes. But if you have a proper data access layer or a framework that provides it then you should be - for the most part - be able to switch on the fly even.

All the major frameworks provide this sort of thing including Mere Mortals as well as also the West Wind Web Store (which includes a light weight Business object framework as well).
