Hell, I can't guarantee that for any VFP feature, but I guess you missed where I actually agree with you.

Nevertheless it hardly seemed necessary to take the man's head off. While the help file in 8.0 _does_ disavow using a Value_Assign(), the help file for 7.0 does not. So, one might reasonably expect it to work without necessarily being an idiot. Especially since it _does_, in fact, work.
