We use the Windows 'Generic' driver for the same reason you stated: the performance in speed over the graphical ( True Type or Raster ) fonts that Windows will use when you identify the printer-specific driver. The point of chosing the 'Generic' driver is that the printer hardware must make up its 'mind' as to what to do with the data -- for example, with older Okidata printers you run through a menu on the front panel of the printer selecting 'Draft', 'NLQ', etc. -- other printers have font selection buttons, and still others must be reset manually every time they are turned on. With the example of the Okidata, you could chose to set up 17 characters per inch horizontally, by 8 lines per inch vertically -- or 10 characters per inch horzontally ( with double wide, only 5 characters per inch horizontally ). I suggest you look at the target printer, and set it to whatever is closest to your desires.
